For some time now we have been umming and ahhing about booking in for a colonic. However, like most people, the thought of someone watching us while we literally let everything go had got the better of us… It all changed when we met with the beautiful Nadia, owner of Vitalita Detox and Wellness Clinic located in Ashgrove, Brisbane. Her genuine and warming presence automatically put our mind at ease, when entering her beautiful clinic.
For those of you who are new to colonics, there are 2 types; open systems and closed systems. Vitalia Detox and Wellness operate using an ‘open system’ which provides more privacy, control and natural movement. For those of you who aren’t interested in the ‘guts and glory’ of the human body, we suggest you stop reading here, as things are about to get a little bit… well… messy. If you are interested in learning about the benefits of colonic hydrotherapy keep reading 🙂
So what is a Colonic we hear you ask?
Colonic Hydrotherapy dates back to ancient Egyptian times, where the gods would pass down a more simplistic form ‘enemas’ onto the people. This health practice was used as a remedy to help treat over 20 stomach and intestinal complaints, ultimately, to drive out excrements.
Our colons play such a vital role in eliminating toxins that enter and exit our body, however, due to our lifestyles these days the average person is carrying 2 – 6 kg of toxic waste in their colon from undigested food, parasites to hormones which begin to be recycled over and over again. When this toxic waste sits in our colon like so, over time it begins to leak into the bloodstream and then makes its way into our tissues and organs throughout our body. This waste stops our body from being able to break down and absorb our food, weakens our immune system, compromised our nervous system and plays havoc with our endocrine system. So you get the picture, having this waste just sitting there in our colon, places a huge strain on the rest of our body, as it provides the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and parasites.
What are the benefits of Colonics?
- Improves muscle tone of the colon
- Reduced toxic waste and absorption
- Increased digestive function
- Restores hydration
- Purging of the liver
- Increases elimination of parasites, bad bacteria and fungi
- Clears the lymphatic system
- Increases immunity
- Clearer skin and eyes
- Clarity of mind (assists anxiety and depression)
- Parasite removal
- Increased vitality
How does a colonic work?
Colonics can be operated via two different systems, these include; open and closed systems. Personally, we tend to favour open systems as you are left in privacy while you literally let all the sh*t go. The open system is a self-administered practice, where Nadia guides you through the process, from explaining what happens throughout the treatment, to the machinery and all the bits in between. Nadia’s professional and warming manner places you at great ease as you know she’s only a buzz away if you need. I know the thought of someone being present throughout the entire treatment makes you tense a little just thinking about it, so the privacy, salt lamps and calming tunes make it a whole lot more relaxing.
The open system allows you to control the water pressure throughout the treatment, so if the cramping becomes too much you are able to taper off for a moment until your ready to go again. We also love the open system as it allows your body to generate peristaltic movements throughout the treatment, a natural process which some of us may have lost over time.
What does it feel like?
When you first begin the session, you insert a very small tube up your backend, you begin to turn the dial on the water filter and it begins to enter your body, you start to feel a slight pressure as your belly begins to expand. Once the water has been running for 2 – 5 minutes you begin to get urges to let it all go, don’t worry there is nothing to be afraid of, there is no pain or mess, it’s just so fascinating seeing what has been trapped inside for goodness knows how long.
How long does the session run?
In total, the pre colonic consultation and colonic take about 60 minutes, once you are finished you are invited to jump into the infrared sauna, which is ever so divine, to sweat all of those remaining toxins out. Once your session is over, you are greeted with a refreshing electrolyte drink and probiotics to help restore the body and thank it for all it has held you through.
How often should you receive Colonics?
The regularity of colonics varies from person to person, as each of our bodies have been through different things along the way, and require individualised treatments. This is why the pre colonic consultation is so important for Nadia to identify your current state of health and the approach required to help manage your body. However, it is best to receive treatments close together, as a single treatment only reaches a small part of the colon. To ensure the entire colon can be cleaned out, it is recommended to undertake up to 6 sessions across a fortnight.
When is the best time to have a Colonic?
Do you feel sluggish? Are you struggling to absorb your food? Do you have brain fog? Do you frequently catch colds and flus? Are you striving to be the best version of yourself? Check, check check. We can all benefit from undertaking a colonic under the care of our chosen health care professionals, however, for optimal results is it suggested to cleanse with us during this period. Why? Because it is especially important to support your body with the right foods (organic, easily digestible) after your cleanse to get the most out of this experience, so cleansing while you let everything physically and emotionally is truly such a rewarding and uplifting experience. When it comes to health, our bodies are so individual, so take a moment after reading this, to see if you truly feel called to take action. If not, that’s okay your body will tell you what it is yearning for, never forget that 🙂
