Whilst we’re getting back into the swing of things after the silly season our livers are needing a little love! The liver works hard to naturally detox your body by filtering the toxins that we’re exposed to every day. Unfortunately weeks of alcohol, overeating and junk food forces your liver to work extra hard!
Your body’s health and wellbeing heavily relies on your liver function and how well it purges toxins from your body. Through the silly season, our livers are often over exposed to toxins and a detox could be the thing your liver needs to get it functioning to optimum capacity. Here are a couple of foods you can incorporate in your diet to support your liver…
Dandelion root tea:
Dandelion root tea is known to promote liver detoxification and has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine. A lot of people also use it as a substitute for caffeine as the taste actually resembles coffee – it’s great if you’re wanting to cut back! Probiotics and fermented foods:
Probiotics and fermented foods support liver detoxification because they contain helpful bacteria to bring your gut flora back into balance after overindulging. Perhaps try incorporating probiotic-rich foods such as miso, organic yoghurt, kombucha and/or a probiotic supplement into your diet to support a healthy digestive and immune system, as well as fermented foods such as kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut and jun tea.
All hail turmeric, cayenne pepper, ginger, parsley and cinnamon! These spices are the simplest way you can enhance your meals to support a healthy liver and a detoxifying boost.
Apple cider vinegar:
Apple cider vinegar IS the holy grail. It helps with so many things like weight loss, balancing PH levels, regulating blood sugar levels, probiotics for the gut, improves digestion, heals skin conditions and what we’re all here for… aids in the removal of toxins! You can take a daily apple cider vinegar shot, or add it to your salads with some olive oil and salt and pepper… delish!
If there wasn’t a good enough excuse to eat berries everyday, there is now! Berries are full of phytonutrients which help to promote healthy liver function.
Veggies like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are incredible at removing toxins from the body. They increase the production of glucosinolate enzymes which help eliminate toxins in our liver.
Green leafy veggies:
Leafy greens such as spinach, kale and rocket are extremely rich in chlorophyll, which is capable of absorbing toxins from the environment and purifying your blood.
While opinions on the taste of coriander can quite literally divide the best of friends, it does an incredible job at detoxifying the body by binding to heavy metals and removing them from the body. It also contains antibacterial compounds that protect against food poisoning and works as an anti-inflammatory.
Beetroot juice is often used to activate liver enzymes and increase bile, helping the liver to function properly. It’s high in betalains which have been shown to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of liver damage.
